We all stared down at the step. There was child’s handwriting in chalk (粉笔) there. I was very 18 . I hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I 19 : “Not me, Dad.”

The others denied (否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us 20 have done it. I tried my best to write the words 25 . I didn’t want Dad to be able to tell it was me. He gathered up our pieces of paper and looked at them. “Since 26 of you will admit to have done it, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said 27 . The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me!

If something is tough, does that mean that it’s also strong? The answer is no – especially when you’re talking about materials. A material’s toughness refers to the amount of energy needed to break it. Strength refers to a material’s ability to carry a load (重量).

Take a ceramic (陶瓷的) plate, for example. It can carry quite a bit of food to the dinner

table, but if you drop it on the floor, it breaks. Ceramic plates are strong, not tough. A rubber ball, on the other hand, can easily be squished (挤压) out of shape, but it’s hard to break. Rubber balls are tough, though not particularly strong.

In fact, when it comes to materials, toughness and strength are like the two poles of a magnet (磁铁). For years, it was thought impossible to find materials that are both tough and strong – until now, with the new nanofiber (纳米纤维) created by scientists from the University of ?Nebraska-Lincoln, US, reported Live Science.

To understand what a nanofiber is, you first have to know about nanotechnology. The “nano” part of “nanotechnology” refers to the size of a nanometer, which is one billionth of a meter. Nanotechnology is the science of controlling matters of extremely small size. But how small are they? Think of it like this: a piece of paper is ?100,000 nanometers thick, and so is your hair. Nanofiber is one type of nanotechnology. To see these fibers, you need a microscope (显微镜) that is many thousands of times more powerful than the ones used in a science class.

Despite their small size, nanofibers can still be woven(编织) into materials that are hundreds of times stronger than steel and are very tough at the same time.

“If materials were tougher, one could make products more lightweight and still be very safe,” Professor Yuris Dzenis, who led the study, told Live Science.

Airplanes, for example, are made of many composite (合成的) materials that, if broken, could lead to terrible crashes. To make up for (补偿)not being tough enough, engineers use more of these materials, making airplanes safer, but also much heavier. But with the new

nanofiber materials, not only planes, but also bridges, bikes can all be made lighter, stronger and tougher.

“Whatever is made of composites can benefit from our nanofibers,” Dzenis said. ( ) 41. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To compare nanofibers and composites.

B. To introduce the development of nanotechnology.

C. To inform us of the characteristics and uses of nanofibers. D. To discuss the toughness and strength of different materials.

( ) 42. How does the author explain the meanings of toughness and strength of a material? A. By giving examples. B. By asking questions. C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing(分析) causes and effects. ( ) 43. According to the text, a nanofiber ______. A. is as thick as one of your hairs B. is both tough and strong C. is the toughest material ever found D. can be seen with a common microscope ( ) 44. What does the underlined word “despite” mean?

A. 如果 B.除非 C. 尽管 D.由于

( ) 45. What can we conclude from the text?

A. Composites are stronger but much heavier than nanofibers. B. Nanofibers have potential for a wide range of applications.

C. It still remains to be seen whether the nanofiber material is safe to use.

D. Whatever is made of composites will one day be made of nanofibers instead.

VI. 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题2分,满分20 分) ( A)

You can be proud of yourselves, even if you can only make one or two of these green changes. The goal here is to limit carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other greenhouse gases, which

are closely connected to the big problem of global-warming (全球变暖).

WAY 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks. You’ll get a 10-cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a dustbin. The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup.

WAY 2: Turn off your computer. When in standby mode (待机模式), your PC is still using energy. Turning off a monitor (显示器) for 40 hours a week may only save $ 5 a month, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds.

WAY 3: Reuse plastic bags. Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile.

WAY 4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom. Most of the toilet paper we use is made from trees found in forests. If every family took the place of one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424,000 trees would still be standing.

WAY 5: Plant a tree. Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5,000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year.

阅读下面短文,根据要求完成下列各题。 21. How many ways are mentioned in the passage?

22. What is happening when your PC is in standby mode?

23. Which ways suggest recycling or reusing of things?

24. How do these ways do good to our environment?

25. What do you usually do to protect our environment?

How to beat sadness

We all have days when we are down, tired and unhappy. That’s OK. You need days like this, or how would you know you are happy? You’ll enjoy your good days even more when you have a few bad days. Even if sadness is a part of life, let’s try to make it small. Here are a few simple ways to help you feel better when you are feeling sad.

1. Stand up straight and this helps your energy flow (流动). When your energy is flowing freely, you can flow too.

2. Smile! It’s easy to do and have good results. This way can not only leave you in a good mood but also bring others a good mood.

3. Listen to music. It can be your favorite music. Some kinds of music work better than others; so try and find out what kind of music works the best for you.

4. Take some “me” time. You can find pleasure in reading a book, watching a sunrise or having a hot bath, or something like that.
